Dental FAQs for Kids
Rocklin, CA

Children do not have the same dental needs as an adult. These differences begin with the fact that children have a different set of teeth for years. Second, their mouths are also developing and growing as they age. They need someone who understands the changes their mouths are going through and knows how to treat issues related to these changes.

Child seeing dentist at Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group in Rocklin, CA

Why Does My Child Need to See a Pediatric Dentist?

In addition to studying baby teeth and how the mouth develops over years, our pediatric specialists at Smiles Island Dental Group also study pharmacology and understand what medications and procedures are safe for children. We have also studied psychology and understand how to address any anxiety and stress that our young patients may have. Our pediatric team regularly attends seminars and updated training sessions to learn about and implement the newest in pediatric care treatment methods.

Should I Buy Fluoride Toothpaste?

There is a lot of misinformation about if or when children should use fluoride toothpaste. This is because the recommendations have changed over the years and not everyone is privy to the latest information. According to the American Dental Association, you should begin brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as your child’s first tooth is visible. Fluoride is vital in the prevention of cavities and tooth decay.

Can My Child Use Adult Toothpaste?

You should not use adult toothpaste with your child. Adult toothpaste contains significantly more fluoride than children’s toothpaste. This is due to the tendency of young children to swallow excess toothpaste instead of spitting it out. Giving your child an adult toothpaste can increase their risk of negative side effects from swallowing large amounts of fluoride. Read more of our tips for brushing.

What Occurs During a Pediatric Emergency Appointment?

When you call us and say you need to bring in your child, let us know that it is an emergency. Explain exactly what happened and the condition your child is in. This will allow us to be prepared to begin treatment as soon as you get here. When you do arrive, we will get your child in with one of our experts as soon as we can. We will do an exam, and we may need to do x-rays to see the full extent of the damage if your child was injured. We will focus on stopping any bleeding and reducing the pain your child feels while assessing the damage or issue. The rest of the visit will depend on what the problem is and what solution we determine is the best option.

We Have Answers to Your Questions
