Rocklin, CA

Rendering of jaw with dental crown at Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group in Rocklin, CA 95765-5874A dental crown is a cap put on a damaged tooth to make it stronger and appear normal. The process restores the damaged teeth to its original size and shape. Therefore, if your tooth cavity is too large for a dental filling, or you have a cracked, or worn out teeth, it's time to consider dental crowning. Also, individuals who have undergone a root canal and those with stained or badly shaped teeth can improve their teeth through crowning. Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group will help you in fixing the crown and give ways of maintaining it.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are four common types of dental crowns, which are grouped according to their composition. These include ceramic, metal alloys, porcelain fused to metal, and gold alloys. Ceramic crowns are made from porcelain-based substances, which are commonly preferred since they match the teeth's natural color. On the other hand, porcelain-fused to metal are more durable because they are fused with metal to make them stronger, while base metal alloys are from non-noble metals that don't undergo corrosion. Gold alloys are a bit expensive and consist of a mixture of gold, copper, and minerals to give a strong bond to the damaged tooth.

Importance of Crowns

There are multiple reasons why dental crowns are important. Some of the major ones include protecting the damaged tooth, restoring a broken or chipped tooth, and to cover or support a filled tooth. Crowns are also used to hold dental bridges to cover a stained or sharp tooth, cover a tooth implant, and modify the tooth. In children, crowns are used to save a damaged tooth and a substitute procedure for fillings and root canals, since it’s a painless procedure for mild cases.

Steps in Placing the Crown

You will need to have two visits to our dental office to ensure the procedure goes on successfully. The first visit will be to examine the damaged tooth, with the second being the final process of placing the crown. During the first visit, an x-ray is done to determine the extensiveness of the damage. If the tooth is decayed or has an infection, a root canal needs to be done before crowning. The dentist will numb the area before shaping the teeth and prepare it for the crown. In case of a badly damaged tooth, a filling will be done before placing the crown. After reshaping, an impression of the shape and size will be taken to create a crown in our dental laboratory. Creating the crown takes two to three weeks, after which you will be called to have the crown placed. Before then, a temporary crown will be worn to ensure the tooth stays in place. After being fixed with the new crown, our dentist will use the dental cement to fix it firmly.

How Long do Dental Crowns Last?

A dental crown will last between five to fifteen years, depending on its material and maintenance. There is no special care required, but you need to keep up with your daily dental care. Also, you will have to avoid grinding and clenching your teeth, chewing ice, and biting hard surfaces.

A dental crown is a perfect way of regaining back your smile and confidence. You may need this procedure if you suffer from decayed, broken, chipped, discolored, or badly shaped teeth.
