Dental Fillings
Dentist Rocklin, CA

Rendering of teeth with 3 filling materials at Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group in Rocklin, CADo you have decayed cavities, cracked, broken, or worn out teeth? If so, if the condition is not severe, you require a dental filling. The filling is a dental process that involves repairing the damaged teeth to make them look naturally good. Our dentist will use materials such as cast gold, silver-fillings, tooth-colored composite fillings, ceramics, or glass ionomer to fill the damaged part of your teeth. If the teeth are decayed or have some other underlying conditions, the condition will be treated first before the filling process takes place. The filling is also used to repair irregularly shaped or uneven surfaces on teeth. Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group will help you with the filling to ensure your teeth look perfect again.

Types of Filling Materials

Various materials can be used to fill your teeth. The type of material depends on the condition of your teeth, availability of the material, cost, and effectiveness. Our dentist will help you choose the best material depending on your condition and budget. Some of the materials used include cast gold, silver fillings, tooth-colored composite fillings, ceramics, and glass ionomer. Gold casting is the most preferred and expensive filling because it's durable, strong, and aesthetically pleasing. Silver-fillings, also known as amalgams, are also durable and strong. Also, there are tooth-colored fillings, which are versatile and bond well to the tooth structure, matching easily with the existing color of the teeth. Other fillings that can be used include ceramics made from porcelain, which last longer than gold and glass ionomer made from glass material and acrylic. Glass ionomer is most suited for children and for fillings below the gum. It releases fluoride, which prevents further tooth decay.

Steps Involved in the Filling Process

During filling, our dentist will numb the affected part to ensure its painless, drill out the decayed or damaged part, and then clean and prepare the tooth for filling. Cleaning involves removing any bacteria and particles to ensure a smooth filling process. After filling, our dentist will secure the fillings and polish the teeth to make them look better. However, if the deterioration or decay is extensive, the dentist will use other means, including putting on liners to protect the nerves.

What Are Indirect Fillings

Indirect fillings are specially made in the dental laboratory according to the teeth's needs. The patient needs to visit our dental office at least twice before the actual placement process. Indirect fillings are recommended when the tooth doesn't have enough structure to support the general filling and not yet fit to be crowned. The process involves removing the decay, taking an impression, and creating a filling in our laboratory. A temporarily filling holds the tooth as a permanent filling is made. On the second visit, the temporary filling is removed and replaced with an indirect filling.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your tooth filling doesn’t get damaged and lasts longer, you should practice oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing, and regularly visiting our dental offices to have the teeth cleaned and examined. It would help if you avoided habits that might damage the teeth, including biting hard things, grinding, and hitting the filled teeth.
